General Information
Ratings Given to
Each Book
Each title has one or two sets of ratings, one from an
AASL reviewer, one from a PLA reviewer, or both.
-
O (Outstanding): Titles with this rating are considered
exceptional by the reviewer. Personal reviews are written by committee
members for Outstanding Titles, and
are listed at the end of the Bibliography.
-
G (General audience): Books with a wide appeal and/or
an expectation of lasting importance. Title may also be of scholarly
technical data on subjects of widespread, current interest.
-
S (Special interest): Is highly recommended for libraries
with in-depth collections in the book’s particular subject.
-
RG (Regional general): Is of interest to readers in
specific geographic areas.
-
RS (Regional special interest): Is of interest to special
in-depth collections in a geographic area.
Books that were not received by a committee member assigned
to that subject area are rated as ”Not Reviewed“.
Books that were not accepted by a committee member have no rating at
all.
Age Ranges for Each
Book
Books rated by the AASL librarian members carry
an audience designation that recommends grade levels for each listing.
Levels are EM (Elementary School, grades K-5), MS
(Middle School, grades 6-8), HS (High School, grades
9-12), and P (Professional Use).

Introduction-AASL Selection Committee
The 20th Edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is an invaluable resource for building secondary school library collections that meet curriculum needs and the diverse learning abilities and styles of students . This annual bibliography is an excellent resource to share with other educators and administrators to engage them in collection building and collaborate in planning for research based activities.
Titles included in the 2010 publication have been recommended by the American University Press Books Publication Selection Committee, a joint committee of practicing professionals and members of the American Association of School Librarians and the Public Library Association. Selections are not made based on price or format, but on content, and are an excellent assessment of content from the higher education community presented with substance and context not always available in the trade books found through standard collection development tools.
Listed in Dewey Decimal order with an author and title index at the back of the book, each listing includes a publisher supplied synopsis and ratings for both school and public library collections. Titles rated by reviewers as "Outstanding" publications appear in a separate section with an original annotation by the reviewer which recognizes the significant content, features, or uniqueness of the title.
Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee highlight their favorite selections at the Annual Conference of the American Library Association. The 2009 "The Best of the Best from the University Presses: Books You Should Know About" program was recorded by C-Span and can be viewed on their website at www.c-spanvideo.org/program/287853-1.
As chair of the AASL American University Press Books Selection Committee, I would like to sincerely thank the committee members for their time and efforts to carefully evaluate books submitted for review and to produce a quality selection tool for school librarians. Your suggestions and comments for making it more useful are always welcome.

From the office of the AASL
Introduction from PLA's University Press Book Reviewers Community of Practice
This year the PLA and AASL University Press committee was truly challenged. Not only were the books that we were reviewing excellent, but we had to be mindful of the economic climate. Every library is facing an uncertain future. Budget cuts are affecting staffing, hours and materials. University press books are known as expensive, often supplementary items. We are here to remind you that they are often vital additions to any collection.
Each librarian on the committee is assigned a specific Dewey decimal range to review. The presses send the books to committee members. The books are then examined and ranked by the committee members based on readability, thoroughness and suitability for libraries. If an individual book is found to be “outstanding” a review is written by the librarian that will hopefully convey the member’s thoughts to you, the selector.
It is the hope of each committee member that you will find this bibliography a useful collection development tool for your library. We wish to thank Kim Miller from the Association of American University Presses for helping to coordinate this venture. Without her assistance, this bibliography would not be possible.
