| |
The 2006 AAUP Annual Meeting was held June 15-18 in New Orleans. Over 500 individuals attended. The program theme, developed by Richard Brown (Georgetown) and the 2006 Program Committee, was Transformational Publishing: Lessons, Tools, and Strategies for Scholarly Publishing in the 21st Century. Several sessions addressed digital publishing issues and initiatives. Prior to the meeting, about 100 people attended 2 workshops. One for editors-in-chief, and the other addressed e-publishing issues. AAUP members can get more information on the e-publishing workshop as well as meeting sessions by visiting the new AAUP wiki. Login and password can be obtained from the members-only site. In addition to the educational sessions, highlights included the presentation of the AAUP Constituency Award to Jennifer Crewe (Columbia) and presidential talks at group meals. 2006-07 AAUP President Penelope Kaiserlian's talk, "A Hundred Years, A Hundred Presses," can be read online. Receptions and breaks were appreciated as always. Thanks go to our sponsors for funding them. Feedback on the meeting is welcome, as are your suggestions for sessions at the 2007 Meeting in Minneapolis. Please complete an evaluation form. If you were not able to attend the annual meeting or want to share information with your staff, you can purchase a set of MP3's for the annual meeting through Conference Media Contractors. Order online or by phone: (888) 222-1614. Registrants also got a chance to see New Orleans as the city struggles to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Several attendees went on a tour of damaged neighborhoods led by Michael Mizell-Nelson, an Assistant Professor of History at the University of New Orleans and Greta Gladney a resident and activist. At the opening banquet on June 15, Times-Picayune Editor Jim Amoss described the experience of putting out a paper in the aftermath of the Hurricane.
