Workshop:
Legal Issues for Publishers

June 13, 2007

Organizers

Daphne Ireland, Intellectual Property Manager, Princeton University Press
Greg Britton, Director, Minnesota Historical Society Press

Speakers

Paul Hannah, Attorney at Law, Kelly & Berens, PA, Minneapolis
David Koesher, Attorney at Law, Minneapolis
Linda Steinman, Attorney at Law, Davis, Wright, Tremaine, LLP, New York

Agenda

Eventually, legal questions cross the desk of everyone in publishing—from the editorial assistant, marketing manager, and warehouse manager to the editor-in-chief and publisher. This workshop will survey the landscape of contemporary publishing law for the university press professional. It will review the fundamentals of copyright and trademark law, offer tips for managing permissions, discuss when you need to tune up your boilerplate contract, and tell you how to manage threats of plagiarism and defamation claims. Intellectual property, publishing, and media attorneys will be on hand to help you do your job in a way that minimizes risks, and protects and capitalizes on the press's IP assets.

Appropriate for all levels of publishing professionals.
