Entry to Canada (and Re-entry to US) for US Citizens

US Citizens are required to bring a valid passport to enter and exit Canada by air. Click here for details about how to apply for or renew a US passport.

For more details about entry and exit requirements from land and sea, visit the US Customs web site: http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/

Entry to Canada From Points Other Than the US

All international travelers should bring a valid passport. In some cases a visa may also be required. For a list of countries whose citizens must obtain visas, see:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp

Traveling with Children

Children also need passports for travel to and from Canada. Customs agents will want evidence that you have permission to bring the child into Canada. If you are the child’s parent or guardian, we recommended that you bring evidence of that (birth certificate, etc.). Also, if one of the child’s parents is not accompanying the child, we recommend that you provide a letter stating that you have permission to take the child across the border.
